(Auckland, 24th November 2007) A 19 year old Shiite Girl was sentenced to 200

 

lashes and six months in prison by Saudi Arabia’s court for being raped by seven Sunni men.  Helen Clark, the New Zealand Prime Minister, after expressing her objection to the verdict asked the country’s diplomats in Saudi Arabia to present their protest against the ruling.

(Mecca, 11th August 2007)On the 6th of August six Iraqis adhering to the Shiite

 

faith were detained, tortured and abused by the Saudi religious guards while on a pilgrimage to Mecca, one of Islam’s holiest cities.  They were released when one of those detained made a call for assistance to a family member on a mobile phone smuggled into the detention centre.  The group of six comprised of US and British citizens.

Samarra Shrine Attacked

(Samarra, 13 June 2007) — One of Shiite Islam’s holiest shrine in Samarra was attacked for a second time.  Sunni extremists blew up the Shrine of Imam Ali al-Hadi and Imam Hasan al-Askari in Samarra at 9:00 a.m.  The same shrine was attacked in 2006 causing an outcry from the world Shiite community.
